Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent and welfare-significant conditions affecting companion dogs, with separation anxiety being the most commonly diagnosed form.
Canine anxiety disorders cause significant, sustained suffering and are frequently misunderstood as stubbornness or bad behavior. Dogs do not act out of spite — destructive or eliminative behavior in separation anxiety is a panic response, not disobedience. Early recognition, proper diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment can transform the lives of both anxious dogs and their guardians. Given that anxiety disorders often worsen without treatment, early intervention is far more effective than waiting. Guardians should seek veterinary support rather than trying to manage severe anxiety with management alone.
