Harbor seal pups are frequently found alone on beaches, and well-intentioned human interference causes significant welfare harm by separating pups from mothers during critical nursing periods.
The well-intentioned impulse to rescue a lone seal pup can directly cause the harm it intends to prevent. By handling or moving a healthy pup, people interrupt the mother-pup reunion that would otherwise occur when the mother returns. The welfare priority is almost always to leave the pup alone, keep other people and dogs away, observe from a distance, and only contact a marine mammal rescue organization if the animal is visibly thin, injured, entangled, or has been alone for over 24 hours. Public education on seal pup behavior is one of the most impactful welfare interventions available for this species.
