Proboscis monkeys are endangered Borneo endemics facing severe habitat loss with complex social structures that make conservation challenging.
Habitat loss creates acute welfare crises for proboscis monkeys. As forest fragments shrink, groups are forced into increasingly degraded areas with insufficient food trees. Fragmentation also disrupts male transfer between groups, creating inbreeding pressure. When forest is cleared, monkeys may enter oil palm plantations where they face conflict with farmers. Rescue and rehabilitation is extremely difficult because their specialized gut flora cannot digest foods other than specific wild leaves, making captivity a welfare challenge of its own.
