Welfare Considerations

Commercial turkey welfare represents one of the most significant welfare challenges in animal agriculture. Leg disorders, cardiovascular problems, and difficulty walking are endemic in fast-growing commercial breeds. The inability to mate naturally and the pain of supporting excessive breast muscle are welfare problems built into the genetics before turkeys are even hatched. Shifting to slower-growing breeds and providing range access addresses multiple welfare problems simultaneously.
