Welfare Considerations

Flamingo welfare at breeding colonies is highly vulnerable to human disturbance. The caustic alkaline environment they select for safety means that any disruption that forces early departure results in chick death. Chicks that cannot walk from drying lake beds face salt encrustation of their legs, immobilizing them. Changing water levels from climate change or upstream water diversion alter the delicate balance that makes breeding lakes usable. The concentration of vast breeding populations at very few sites means disturbance events can have population-level consequences.
