Free-range certification requires outdoor access but the actual use of outdoor areas by chickens varies enormously based on range design, stocking, and management.
Free-range certification does not guarantee meaningful outdoor access. If only a small fraction of birds use the range, the majority receive no welfare benefit from the outdoor provision. Range design is critical: birds are reluctant to move far from the house without cover, so range with trees, shrubs, or artificial shade structures near pop holes dramatically increases use. The welfare value of outdoor access comes from the behavioral opportunities it provides — foraging, dust bathing, and natural light — not from the mere existence of an outdoor area. Meaningful free-range welfare requires attention to range quality and use, not just legal compliance with area requirements.
