Saiga antelopes have experienced catastrophic mass mortality events killing hundreds of thousands of animals in days, representing some of the most extreme wildlife welfare crises recorded.

Welfare Considerations

The 2015 saiga die-off represents one of the most severe acute welfare events in recorded wildlife history. Hundreds of thousands of animals died from haemorrhagic septicaemia within days across the steppe. The infection caused rapid multi-organ failure. Pregnant females and newborn calves, concentrated during the synchronized birth period, were disproportionately affected. The psychological and social disruption of the herd from mass simultaneous mortality is difficult to quantify but severe for surviving animals. Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency of conditions triggering such events, making this a growing welfare concern.
