Emus farmed for oil, leather, and meat face welfare challenges related to their large body size and behavioral complexity in captive settings.
Farmed emu welfare is poorly regulated and little studied. Emus have complex behavioral needs including large foraging ranges, social interaction, and curiosity-driven exploration. Intensive housing on concrete or small paddocks fails to meet these needs. The lack of welfare standards specific to emus perpetuates poor practice.
