Urban fox welfare involves both exceptional adaptive success and significant hazards. High-density urban living creates disease transmission opportunities, with mange spreading rapidly through fox families using shared spaces. Road mortality affects particularly young foxes dispersing from birth territories in autumn. Human conflict including deliberate poisoning and illegal trapping causes acute suffering. Mange without treatment causes prolonged suffering from intense pruritus, secondary infections, and eventual death from hypothermia when fur is lost. Mange treatment programs in some cities provide significant welfare benefit to affected populations.
