Asian elephant welfare in captivity varies enormously from severely abusive to genuinely high standard. The phajaan training method used to break the spirit of captured wild elephants involves prolonged restraint, starvation, and physical beating that causes acute trauma and lasting psychological damage. Working conditions in logging and tourism often involve overwork, inadequate rest, poor nutrition, and isolation from conspecifics. Elephants in these conditions show stereotyped behaviors including repetitive swaying indicating severe psychological distress. Welfare-focused elephant facilities exist and demonstrate that high welfare is achievable, but require significant financial investment that tourism operators are rarely willing to make without consumer pressure.
