Dehorning of cattle causes significant acute pain and is routinely performed without adequate analgesia on millions of cattle annually, representing a major preventable welfare harm.
Dehorning pain is severe, acute, and largely avoidable. The procedure disrupts blood supply and damages nerve tissue, causing pain that persists for hours to days. Studies consistently show that cattle dehorned without analgesia show elevated stress hormones, reduced feeding, and behavioral pain indicators compared to those receiving proper pain management. Despite the availability of effective and inexpensive pain relief protocols, many farms worldwide still dehorn without them. Breeding for naturally hornless polled cattle offers a long-term solution that eliminates the welfare cost entirely.
