Mice in laboratory settings experience a range of welfare challenges including social isolation, handling stress, painful procedures, and inadequate environmental enrichment. Because mice are prey animals, they hide signs of illness and distress, making welfare assessment difficult with traditional observation methods. Automated monitoring technologies including sensors, cameras, and AI-based behavioral analysis can detect early signs of deterioration and enable intervention before suffering escalates. Improving welfare monitoring is not only ethically important but also scientifically beneficial — stressed animals produce more variable data, undermining research quality.
