Veal calves are a byproduct of the dairy industry, with male dairy calves sold for veal production in conditions that have historically been among the most welfare-deficient in animal agriculture.
Veal calf welfare cannot be separated from dairy production. Every glass of dairy milk creates a male calf who has no place in the dairy system. Traditional veal production responded to this economic reality by creating intensive confinement systems that caused profound suffering through immobility, isolation, and deliberate anemia. While welfare standards have improved significantly in many countries, the fundamental problem — surplus male calves with low economic value — creates structural incentives for poor welfare. Higher-welfare rose veal and on-farm killing of surplus calves at birth represent opposite ends of the solution space.
