Entangled sea lions that survive long enough for rescue are typically found in severe distress with constricting wounds that have cut into tissue as the animal grew around the entanglement. Flipper amputations from severe constriction wounds permanently impair swimming ability in species that depend entirely on their flippers for locomotion and feeding. Domoic acid toxicosis causes neurological damage including seizures, disorientation, and death — a consequence of climate-driven harmful algal bloom increases. Reducing marine debris and improving fishing gear design represent the highest-impact interventions for sea lion welfare.
