Brown pelicans recovered from near-extinction following the DDT ban and are now threatened by plastic pollution, oil spills, and habitat disturbance at nesting colonies.
Pelicans entangled in fishing monofilament suffer chronic, progressive injuries as line cuts into wing tissue or hooks cause internal damage to the digestive tract. Birds unable to be captured for treatment may survive for weeks in deteriorating condition before dying. Nesting colony disturbance causes immediate chick abandonment — chicks left exposed to temperature extremes die rapidly. Oil spill events cause rapid deterioration of waterproofing feathers, leaving oil-soaked pelicans unable to regulate temperature or dive for food. The recovery of brown pelicans from DDT represents one of conservation's great successes, but ongoing threats require continued vigilance and management.
