Cattle are behaviorally motivated to graze — moving across a pasture, selecting plants, and interacting with varied terrain are activities that fulfill deep behavioral needs. Zero-grazing systems frustrate these motivations even when nutritional needs are met. Lameness, a major welfare problem in dairy cattle, is significantly worse on concrete than on pasture. Restricted movement limits the expression of natural locomotion and exploration. The absence of social grazing dynamics also impoverishes the social environment. Higher welfare frameworks increasingly require meaningful pasture access as a baseline standard, recognizing that indoor systems cannot fully substitute for the behavioral complexity of outdoor environments.
