Sea lice infestation represents one of the most significant acute welfare problems in aquaculture. Fish with heavy louse burdens show avoidance behavior, reduced feeding, abnormal swimming, and physiological stress responses. The lesions caused by feeding lice are chronic wounds that are likely painful based on fish pain research. Chemical treatments involve bath immersion or in-feed medication — both potentially stressful. Cleaner fish used as biological control have their own welfare needs that are often inadequately met; wrasse mortality on salmon farms can exceed 50% annually. Addressing sea lice welfare requires investment in closed containment systems, better cleaner fish husbandry, and research into non-chemical control methods.
