Dust welfare harm in feedlots operates through two primary pathways: respiratory tract irritation that predisposes animals to pneumonia, and ocular exposure that causes infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. Pinkeye is an extremely painful condition — affected cattle hold their eyes closed, avoid light, and show reduced feeding. Left untreated or treated late, it causes corneal scarring and permanent blindness. The respiratory pathway is more insidious: chronic low-level dust inhalation damages mucosal defenses and facilitates bacterial and viral pathogen invasion. Dust abatement through pen surface management, strategic water application, and windbreaks is technically feasible and cost-effective when weighed against disease treatment costs. It represents a practical welfare refinement that many operations could implement with modest investment.
