Cell culture and organoid technology represents the replacement pillar of the 3Rs in its most promising current form. Each animal experiment replaced by a validated organoid model prevents the suffering associated with that experiment — a direct welfare benefit. The additional scientific advantage is significant: human organoids predict human drug responses more accurately than animal models in several toxicity domains, creating alignment between welfare and scientific quality. Regulatory acceptance has been the primary barrier to faster adoption — drug regulators have historically required animal data before clinical trials. Legislative changes removing mandatory animal testing requirements create space for organoid and organ-chip models to displace animal studies. The scientific community, regulatory agencies, and welfare advocates are increasingly aligned on the value of this transition, creating favorable conditions for accelerated adoption.
