Water access welfare failure is both common and consequential in pig production. The combination of insufficient drinker numbers, inadequate flow rates, and poor maintenance creates situations where pigs cannot meet their water requirements — with cascading effects on feed intake, growth, health, and welfare. Sows with restricted water access during lactation experience rapid welfare deterioration: reduced milk production stresses nursing piglets, and maternal body condition loss accelerates. The behavioral indicators of water insufficiency — increased time at drinkers, competition, redirected oral behavior — are observable but often misinterpreted. Routine drinker auditing including flow rate measurement, height assessment, and contamination checking is a high-impact welfare management practice that requires modest investment of time and equipment relative to the welfare benefit delivered.
