Laboratory animal biosecurity is a welfare system at facility scale. Pathogen introduction triggers disease that causes individual animal suffering and often requires depopulation of entire colonies — a catastrophic welfare event. Preventing introduction through rigorous biosecurity protocols is therefore a welfare investment with substantial returns. However, biosecurity protocols themselves have welfare implications: animals in maximum barrier conditions may experience more restricted social contact and environmental complexity due to sterilization requirements. Personnel entering and exiting barrier areas face time constraints that limit the enrichment attention they can provide to animals. Balancing biosecurity stringency with welfare-supportive husbandry requires ongoing attention. Modern individually ventilated cages allow enrichment provision including nesting material and shelter objects while maintaining cage-level biosecurity — demonstrating that welfare and biosecurity are not inherently in tension.
