Climate change creates an overlapping set of welfare harms for koalas: nutritional stress from declining leaf quality, acute thermal stress during heatwaves, injury from fire, and increased mortality from road accidents as heat-stressed animals descend to find water. Each of these harms affects individual koalas in ways that cause suffering — starvation, burning, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and traumatic injury. Welfare-sensitive conservation strategies must address immediate threats through wildlife hospital capacity and rescue infrastructure while simultaneously pursuing the landscape-scale changes needed to maintain koala habitat and reduce climate vulnerability.
