Manatees struck by boat propellers experience severe traumatic injuries including deep lacerations, fractured ribs, internal organ damage, and limb amputation. Non-fatal strikes cause chronic pain from healing injuries and may impair feeding, swimming, and thermoregulation for the remainder of the animal life. The preventability of boat strike mortality makes it particularly ethically problematic — slowing down in designated areas and using polarized sunglasses to spot manatees before approaching them would save dozens of lives annually without significant inconvenience to boaters. Effective enforcement of speed zones is the most direct welfare intervention available to regulators.
