Mycotoxin-related welfare harm is often invisible — pigs experiencing immune suppression, reproductive disruption, and subclinical liver damage do not show obvious distress signals that trigger management responses. The welfare impact accumulates silently through reduced growth, increased disease susceptibility, and impaired reproduction. Proactive monitoring of feed ingredients, storage management to prevent mold growth, and use of validated mycotoxin binders reduces but does not eliminate risk. The increasing unpredictability of mycotoxin risk with climate change makes feed quality management an increasingly important welfare priority in pig production across all systems.
