Fishers, medium-sized mustelids once extirpated from much of their range, have been recovering through reintroduction programs, but habitat fragmentation and rodenticide poisoning continue to threaten individuals.
Fisher recovery represents a genuine conservation success, but individual animals face welfare challenges that limit full population restoration. Anticoagulant rodenticide exposure from illegal cannabis cultivation causes prolonged internal hemorrhage that is a painful and slow welfare harm for affected individuals. Habitat fragmentation forces fishers to cross roads and developed areas where vehicle mortality is significant. Old-growth forest loss means many reintroduced fishers must establish territories in habitat of lower quality than they evolved to use. Addressing these individual welfare threats — rodenticide enforcement, road crossing infrastructure, and old-growth protection — directly serves both population recovery and animal welfare.
