Whether and how much bumblebees experience suffering remains scientifically uncertain, but emerging evidence suggests insects have rudimentary pain-like states and emotional valence. Neonicotinoid exposure causes disorientation, reduced foraging success, and impairs the ability of queens to found new colonies — outcomes that likely involve aversive states. Colony failure means the death of hundreds of individuals. At the scale of bumblebee population decline — millions of colonies lost — even a small probability of morally relevant experience implies significant welfare concern. The most tractable intervention is reducing pesticide exposure through bans on neonicotinoids and other bee-toxic chemicals, combined with habitat restoration to provide nutritious, diverse forage.
