Cattle are often perceived as passive, low-intelligence animals, but research reveals a cognitively active species capable of learning, memory, and positive emotional states. When given access to mechanical brushes, cattle use them enthusiastically, showing relaxed postures and reduced heart rates — indicators of positive welfare. Cognitive challenge through learning tasks produces what researchers describe as excited, positive states analogous to pleasure. These findings have practical implications: enriched farm environments with varied substrates, brushes, and opportunities for exploration produce measurable welfare improvements at low cost. Recognising cattle cognitive capacity shifts farm animal welfare from a question of minimising negatives to actively providing for positive experiences — a more ambitious and more humane welfare standard.
