Cheetah welfare in captivity is compromised by their unique physiology and ethological needs. As coursing predators that rely on sight to pursue prey at high speed, cheetahs in small enclosures cannot express fundamental hunting behaviour. Chronic stress in captivity suppresses reproduction and contributes to the poor breeding success that makes captive population management difficult. Low genetic diversity means that disease outbreaks in wild populations can cause rapid, widespread mortality. Conservation breeding programs must prioritise welfare through large, naturalistic enclosures, appropriate social groupings — cheetahs are unusual in that males form coalitions while females are solitary — and reduced human habituation.
