Feedlot finishing is the dominant system for beef production in North America. High-density confinement, grain feeding, and limited space raise significant welfare concerns for the millions of cattle involved.
Feedlot welfare problems arise from the combination of high-density confinement, abrupt dietary change to high-grain rations, and limited behavioural opportunity. Ruminal acidosis from grain overload causes acute pain, reduced feed intake, and lameness from laminitis — a secondary condition affecting the hooves. Liver abscesses cause chronic pain in a significant proportion of cattle throughout their feedlot residence. Respiratory disease spreads rapidly through dense populations. Behavioural deprivation — the inability to graze, explore, or exercise freely — causes frustration in animals evolved for continuous movement. Environmental challenges including extreme heat, cold, and mud cause additional welfare harms. Welfare improvements include slower dietary transition protocols, acidosis monitoring, shade and ventilation provision, and stocking density limits.
