Heat stress in cattle causes chronic physiological suffering that reduces quality of life across entire herds during summer periods. Elevated body temperature, increased respiration rate, reduced movement, crowding around water sources, and reduced feed intake are all indicators of stress. The welfare impact is compounded for high-producing dairy cows whose metabolic heat generation is already elevated. Prolonged heat stress causes immune suppression, metabolic disorders, and reproductive failure. Climate change is extending heat stress seasons and increasing peak temperatures, making shade and cooling provision increasingly critical. Feedlot cattle with no shade face some of the highest heat stress burdens. Simple shade provision — natural or artificial — represents a low-cost welfare intervention with significant impact that should be mandatory in all commercial cattle systems.
