Flea infestations cause intense pruritus and can transmit tapeworms and disease. Effective prevention is simple but requires consistent year-round application in most climates.
Flea infestations cause significant welfare harms to companion animals. Intense pruritus drives compulsive scratching, biting, and self-trauma that damages skin integrity, causes secondary infections, and significantly reduces quality of life. Flea allergic dermatitis — triggered by an immune response to flea saliva — can cause severe skin disease from minimal flea exposure in sensitised animals. Heavy infestations in small animals and puppies can cause anaemia through blood loss. Beyond physical discomfort, the constant irritation of flea infestation causes behavioural changes including restlessness and reduced normal activity. Prevention is straightforward and highly effective with modern products, but owner inconsistency — skipping applications or treating only the pet without environmental treatment — allows infestations to develop and persist.
