Pangolin rehabilitation represents one of the most welfare-challenging aspects of wildlife rescue. The extreme stress of captivity triggers physiological cascades in pangolins that are difficult to interrupt regardless of care quality. Animals that curl into defensive balls in response to handling cannot feed, thermoregulate effectively, or maintain the gut microbiome their highly specialised digestive system requires. Death from stress, starvation, and secondary infection is common within days or weeks. Facilities that succeed in extended rehabilitation do so through extraordinary commitment: minimising all human contact, using remote feeding systems, providing exact substrate conditions, and transferring gut content from wild relatives. The welfare calculus for pangolins emphasises prevention of trafficking as more welfare-effective than rehabilitation after capture, given the high mortality rates even in the best facilities.
