Wild Atlantic salmon suffering from sea lice infestations experience tissue damage, impaired osmoregulation, and debilitating physical deterioration. Juvenile fish with heavy louse burdens often die before reaching the sea. Returning spawning adults weakened by ocean conditions face additional stressors from thermal barriers and barriers to passage. Each failed spawning run represents both reproductive loss and the suffering of fish unable to complete their biological imperative. Reducing salmon farm lice loads near wild migration routes is the most direct welfare intervention.
