Proboscis Monkeys: Habitat Loss and Conservation Welfare

Proboscis monkeys are Borneo endemic primates whose specialist diet and social structure make them highly vulnerable to deforestation and fragmentation of coastal mangrove and riverine forests.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Habitat fragmentation forces proboscis monkeys into smaller forest patches where food availability and quality decline, increasing competition and stress. Isolated groups lose genetic diversity over time. Animals near forest edges face greater exposure to human disturbance, hunting pressure and domestic animal diseases. Captured individuals suffer severely in captivity as their specialised digestive system cannot tolerate captive diets, causing fatal bloat. Boat traffic along rivers causes repeated disturbance and displacement from crucial feeding and sleeping sites.
