Farmed Duck Welfare: Water Access, Housing and Slaughter

Ducks are highly motivated to perform water-based behaviours including bathing, swimming and foraging in water, making the denial of open water access in intensive farming systems a significant and well-documented welfare problem.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Denial of water access to waterfowl is one of the clearest examples in farmed animal welfare of a system that prevents species-appropriate behaviour at scale. Ducks without water access cannot perform the head immersion needed to clear their eyes and nostrils, leading to higher rates of eye and nasal disease. The frustration of a highly motivated behaviour that cannot be satisfied causes chronic stress. Foie gras production causes additional acute welfare impacts through forced feeding. Slaughter without effective prior stunning remains common in some production contexts. The scale of duck farming globally means the aggregate welfare impact of these deficiencies is very large.
