Sea lice cause a prolonged welfare insult — infestations develop over weeks and cause escalating skin damage, chronic pain and physiological stress before treatment thresholds are reached and intervention occurs. Treatment methods carry their own welfare costs: thermolicers expose fish to 34-degree water that causes thermal stress and physical injury, and hydrogen peroxide treatments cause acute respiratory distress. Chemical treatments may cause sublethal neurological effects. The increasing resistance of sea lice populations to chemical treatments means that effective control is becoming harder to achieve while maintaining acceptable treatment welfare costs. The aggregate welfare cost across billions of farmed salmon annually is very large.
