Dog Pancreatitis Management and Dietary Care

Pancreatitis in dogs causes significant abdominal pain and can be life-threatening; dietary management is both a treatment and a prevention strategy for this increasingly common condition.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pancreatitis causes genuine and significant pain. Dogs with acute pancreatitis adopt a hunched, reluctant posture characteristic of abdominal agony; some become obtunded from endotoxaemia. Pain management with opioids or NSAIDs is essential and often undertreated. Withholding food and water, historically recommended, is now recognised as harmful and nutritional support should begin early. Chronic pancreatitis causes recurrent bouts of pain that may be misattributed to other causes in dogs that do not present dramatically. Owners who share rich human food with dogs, or fail to secure garbage, frequently precipitate pancreatitis episodes. Post-recovery dietary management with low-fat food reduces recurrence risk. Given that most cases are preventable through dietary management, owner education is the highest-impact welfare intervention.
