Welfare Considerations

Traditional white veal production caused severe welfare harms: individual crate confinement preventing normal movement and social behaviour, iron-deficient diets causing anaemia and craving for any iron source, and a very short life spent in darkness. These practices were so inhumane that they drove bans in multiple jurisdictions. Rose veal systems represent a genuine welfare improvement: group housing allows social behaviour, diets provide adequate nutrition, and calves live longer with greater behavioural expression. However, the most significant welfare problem in the dairy-veal system is the routine killing of male calves at birth because they cannot produce milk and the veal market is insufficient to absorb them. This represents both a welfare failure and an enormous waste of life. Developing market demand for higher-welfare veal is more animal-friendly than the alternative of birth killing.
