Pain recognition in farm animals has improved substantially but analgesic use remains inconsistent and often inadequate, leaving millions of animals in avoidable pain across routine husbandry procedures.
Pain in farm animals during and after routine husbandry procedures is pervasive, measurable, and largely preventable with available medications. Animals undergoing castration, dehorning, beak trimming, or farrowing complications experience acute pain that persists for hours or days without analgesic intervention. Behavioural and physiological pain indicators including cortisol, altered posture, reduced feeding, and facial action units confirm that these procedures are aversive. The barriers to analgesic use are primarily economic, regulatory, and cultural: some medications require veterinary prescription, adding cost and friction; farm culture historically dismissed animal pain; and short production cycles mean welfare investments seem hard to justify financially. Changing veterinary prescribing norms, reducing the cost of licensed analgesics, and building pain management into certification standards are the most effective levers for improving welfare for the largest number of farm animals.
