Dairy goat production shares many welfare challenges with dairy cattle, including early kid separation, disbudding without anaesthesia, and the challenge of managing the male kid problem.
Dairy goat welfare is often overlooked relative to dairy cattle, yet the welfare issues are comparable in nature and scale. Early kid separation causes acute distress vocalisation in both doe and kid that persists for days. Does produce milk in response to kid suckling stimuli; the disruption of this bond is physiologically and behaviourally distressing. Disbudding without anaesthesia causes acute pain; the procedure is performed on young kids whose thermal regulation is limited and whose pain sensitivity is acute. Male kid killing at or shortly after birth reflects the structural problem of dairy production creating more animals than can be accommodated. Extended weaning programs that allow some mother-young contact before separation have been shown to reduce distress without substantially reducing milk yield.
