Great crested newts experience welfare impacts from both habitat loss and direct human disturbance. Newts caught in drift fencing or pitfall traps during development surveys are handled repeatedly, which causes stress and can cause injury if protocols are not followed carefully. Translocated newts removed from development sites may be released into suboptimal habitats where breeding success is lower. Drought years cause mass larval mortality when ponds dry before metamorphosis is complete. Road mortality is significant in spring when newts migrate to breeding ponds. The illegal disturbance of occupied sites causes acute stress and disrupts breeding.
