Wolverines living in fragmented or degraded habitats face increased energetic costs travelling between patches, reduced reproductive success from lack of suitable denning snow, and elevated mortality from roads and human contact. Genetic isolation of small populations increases inbreeding depression over generations. Female wolverines require deep snowpack persisting into spring for successful denning — climate-driven earlier snowmelt is causing denning failures. Individual wolverines in isolated populations must range even more widely to find mates and food, increasing road-crossing mortality. Conservation of wolverine welfare thus requires both habitat protection and active management of landscape connectivity through wildlife crossing infrastructure.
