Access to outdoor environments and rooting substrate is a fundamental welfare need for pigs, and outdoor and free-range production systems that provide these opportunities deliver substantially better welfare outcomes.
Pigs are highly motivated to root — a behaviour so fundamental that they will persist in rooting movements even on bare concrete where no reward is possible. This behavioural need frustration in barren indoor systems contributes to chronic stress and redirected aggression toward pen mates. Outdoor access allows pigs to express the full range of their natural behavioural repertoire including rooting, wallowing, grazing, and social exploration. Pigs in outdoor systems spend more time performing positive welfare behaviours and less time performing damaging redirected behaviours. Higher welfare certification schemes typically require outdoor access, and consumer demand for higher welfare pork is driving gradual industry transition in some markets.
