Veal production has historically caused severe welfare harm through isolation in individual crates, but the transition to group housing and improved husbandry is transforming the sector in many regions.
Individual veal crates caused profound suffering through social isolation, movement restriction, and chronic frustration. Calves are highly social and motivated to play and explore. Iron-deficient diets for white veal cause anemia and the strong craving for iron drives calves to lick metal fixtures obsessively. The transition to group housing with iron and roughage access eliminates most of these harms. Rose veal programs address the welfare problem of dairy bull calves being killed at birth by providing a market for calves raised under improved standards. Consumer willingness to choose rose veal over white veal, or to reduce veal consumption, directly shifts producer incentives toward higher-welfare systems.
