Pigs are cognitively sophisticated animals capable of complex learning and play, and providing cognitive enrichment significantly improves their welfare in intensive production systems.
Pigs raised in barren environments experience cognitive and behavioral deprivation analogous to what would be considered inhumane treatment of other cognitively complex animals. The same intelligence that makes pigs capable of impressive learning tasks also makes barren confinement acutely distressing. Stereotypic behaviors, aggression, and tail biting are symptomatic of an environment that fails to meet cognitive needs. Providing enrichment that engages pigs in problem-solving, exploration, and play addresses these needs at low cost. The welfare gains from enrichment are well-documented, and the primary barriers to implementation are producer culture and perceived cost rather than scientific uncertainty.
