Trout at high stocking densities experience chronic stress that compromises immune function, growth efficiency, and behavioral expression. Subordinate fish that cannot access feeding areas become malnourished while dominant individuals monopolize resources. Fin damage from aggression is an objective welfare indicator commonly used in aquaculture audits. Water quality deteriorates rapidly at high densities when filtration systems are inadequate, causing hypoxia and ammonia exposure. The welfare case for lower stocking densities aligns partially with economic interests, as stressed fish have poorer feed conversion and higher disease susceptibility. However, the market price premium for higher-welfare certified trout is necessary to compensate producers for reduced yield from lower-density systems.
