Capybaras have become popular exotic pets in some regions, but their complex social and environmental needs make them unsuitable for most domestic settings and frequently result in welfare compromise.
Most private owners cannot provide the conditions capybaras need for good welfare. Solitary housing causes chronic psychological distress in these intensely social animals. Inadequate water access prevents normal thermoregulation and behavioral expression. Insufficient grazing space leads to obesity and dental problems from inappropriate diet. Capybaras that cannot express normal behavior develop stereotypies and increased stress responses. Veterinary care is difficult as few practitioners have capybara expertise. The growing social media popularity of capybaras has increased demand without improving the welfare outcomes for animals kept in inadequate conditions. Regulation of capybara ownership with welfare-based standards is warranted in jurisdictions where private keeping is permitted.
