Heat-stressed livestock experience a cascade of physiological changes including elevated body temperature, altered blood flow, reduced feed intake, and immune suppression. Severe heat stress causes disorientation, loss of coordination, and death. Chronic moderate heat stress impairs reproduction, growth, and immune function over entire summer production periods. Shade provision is the most basic and cost-effective intervention — animals without shade cannot avoid radiant heat exposure. Sprinkler systems combined with fans provide evaporative cooling that can reduce effective temperature by 10 degrees or more. The welfare costs of heat stress are preventable in most production systems, and the economic costs of reduced production provide aligned incentives for welfare intervention. Producer inaction in the face of preventable heat stress is an increasingly significant welfare issue as climate change expands the risk zone.
