Japanese quail farmed intensively for eggs and meat face welfare challenges similar to battery-caged hens in small wire cages with barren environments.
Intensive quail housing in wire-floored battery cages prevents all natural behaviors including dustbathing, foraging, and social interaction. Wire floors cause foot damage and discomfort. The fast growth rate of meat quail leads to metabolic issues. Despite quail welfare receiving less attention than chickens, the welfare challenges are comparable and the scale is significant.
