Nutritional deficiencies are among the most common and preventable causes of illness and reduced wellbeing in companion parrots.
Nutritional welfare in companion parrots is simultaneously one of the most impactful and most neglected aspects of parrot care. The persistence of seed-only feeding despite decades of veterinary guidance against it reflects how slow husbandry norms change in companion animal keeping. The consequences are severe: nutritional deficiencies shorten lifespans, compromise immune function, and reduce quality of life across years or decades of a parrot life. The connection between nutrition and behaviour is also important: nutrient-deficient parrots may show feather-destructive behaviour and aggression that stem partly from physical illness rather than purely psychological causes. Improving parrot nutritional welfare requires better owner education at the point of purchase, clearer labelling, and greater availability of species-appropriate foods.
